From the Barrel to the Glass: Exploring Japanese Nikka Whisky

The “Water of Life” which is what whisky means in Scottish, is one of the most prestigious and luxurious beverages. With origins in Scotland, but appreciated far beyond its borders, this drink has fascinated brewers and consumers across the world for centuries.

Nestled among the lush greenery of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido lies the Yoichi Distillery, home to one of the most revered whisky producers in the world – Nikka Whisky. With a history deeply rooted in craftsmanship and tradition, Nikka has emerged as a prominent figure in the global whisky scene, offering a unique taste of Japanese culture in every sip.

What Is the Story of Nikka Whisky?

The story of Nikka Whisky begins with its founder, Masataka Taketsuru, often referred to as the “Father of Japanese Whisky.” Taketsuru’s journey started in the early 20th century when he travelled to Scotland to study the art of whisky making. Inspired by the techniques and traditions of Scottish distillation, Taketsuru returned to Japan with a dream of creating authentic Japanese whisky.

In 1934, Taketsuru established the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido, a region reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, with its rugged terrain and cool climate – ideal conditions for whisky production. Here, amidst the pristine nature and pure water sources, Taketsuru laid the foundation for what would become Nikka Whisky. Made with the traditional coal-fired distillation process, the Yoichi Single Malt has unique features like boldness and toasty burnt flavours.

Three decades later, in 1967, he found another ideal site for the second distillery, a gorgeous foggy glen at a junction of two rivers, coincidentally called Nikkawa. This became the home of the Masataka distillery, aimed to create distinctive malt whiskies, which were the complete contrast of the ones made in Yoichi. Using slower distillation methods and different pot stills, they created the Miyagikyo Single Malt with soft and floral characteristics.

Craftsmanship and Tradition

At the heart of the complex flavoured Nikka Japanese Whisky lies a commitment to craftsmanship and tradition. From the selection of the finest ingredients to the meticulous process of distillation and aging, every step is carried out with precision and care.

One of the hallmarks of Nikka’s craftsmanship is its dedication to using traditional copper pot stills, a technique borrowed from Scottish distillation practices. These stills play a crucial role in shaping the character and flavour profile of Nikka whiskies, imparting depth and complexity to each expression.

Furthermore, Nikka’s adherence to traditional aging methods sets it apart in the world of whisky. The company maintains an extensive inventory of oak barrels, sourced from various regions around the world, including America and Europe. These barrels are carefully selected to impart distinct flavours and aromas to the whisky as it matures, resulting in a rich and nuanced final product.

The Range of Expressions

Nikka Whisky offers a diverse range of expressions, each showcasing the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation. From single malts to blended whiskies, there is something to suit every palate and occasion.

One of Nikka’s most renowned expressions is the Yoichi Single Malt, crafted at the Yoichi Distillery using traditional methods passed down through generations. Known for its bold and smoky character, this whisky pays homage to the rugged landscapes of Hokkaido, with hints of sea salt and peat smoke.

For those seeking a more delicate and refined experience, Nikka’s Miyagikyo Single Malt offers a contrast to the robust flavours of Yoichi. Distilled at the Miyagikyo Distillery in the scenic Miyagi Prefecture, this whisky is characterised by its floral aromas, fruity notes, and silky texture, making it a favourite among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.

In addition to its single malts, Nikka also produces a range of blended whiskies, including the iconic Nikka From the Barrel. This award-winning expression combines whiskies from both the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, resulting in a harmonious blend of flavours with a rich and spicy finish.
